Since hitting the big leagues with his own wildly successful fashion house, Peter Nygard has been living the high life. He is currently one of the richest men in Canada, with a net worth running in the millions. He has his own private jet, a Boeing 727 with his name emblazoned on it in giant blue letters. Life, however, had not always been so good for the fashion tycoon. Nygard is the son of Finnish bakers, who, in 1952, immigrated to Manitoba with their two small children in tow. The Nygard family first settled in the farming town of Deloraine. Today, a park in the same town bears Nygard’s name. The family later relocated to Winnipeg.

After finishing his studies at the University of North Dakota, Peter Nygard went to work for the shipping department of a struggling women’s wear manufacturer in Winnipeg. He later purchased 20 percent of the company using his life savings and an $8,000 loan as capital. Within just a few years, he had become the new owner of the company, which would later become known as Nygard International.

With his work ethic and sound business decisions, Peter Nygard had managed to turn his newly-owned clothing company completely. From a modest yearly profit of $800,000 Nygard’s company was fast becoming one of the biggest brands to take the country by storm. To the opinion of some, Nygard had singlehandedly elevated the standards of excellence for clothing manufacturing in Canada. By 1978, the company was expanding its reach to the United States, setting the stage for the brand’s domination of the North American market. By 1987, Nygard International had planted its foothold abroad, including in Nygard’s native Finland.

Today, Nygard International has an established presence in no less than four different continents. In recent years, Peter Nygard had championed the modernization of the company’s manufacturing facilities. This move would later prove to further cement Nygard International’s status as a powerhouse in the fashion industry and in manufacturing technology at large.
